San Antonio's October
guild meeting hosted Dan Hammel of Phoenix Arizona. He is the
Executive Director of Sales and Marketing for Leather Craftsman
and wouldn't you know it, he gave us a program on album design
entitled "You Can Judge a Book by its Cover". Dan started
his program by emphasizing the importance of defining a business
direction and writing a plan that identifies your target market.
It is also important to recognize and be honest about your skill
level. Even though this is a basic to business, it is always
good to hear again. As Dan quoted, "Business and good fortune
are no accident."
The rest of the program
Dan showed many different styles of album design from wedding
to portrait albums. Black was the tradition for so long just
as Henry Ford sold only black cars until he realized he could
paint a car with color. The same holds true of albums. Leather
Craftsman sells a wide variety of colored leathers, suedes and
fabrics that can all be mixed and created to showcase anyone's
unique style. Albums provide a great alternative to framing large
portraits. One idea Dan had was to create your own legacy by
leaving your children an album of all your competition images
as a keepsake of your work instead of having them all propped
up against the wall at home. Sometimes it is good to risk surprising
a customer with a sample album of a select grouping of images
from the session that may just sell.thanks to Dan for all the
good ideas!
